Danc-ercise

After pondering the fact that I need to do more to make life fun and interesting for my kids, I think I really surprised them one day when I agreed to play Just Dance with them. Hannah, Charlie and I danced a few times, our favorite is the Ghostbuster dance. Sadie was so astounded she ran and got my phone and took pictures. Probably thought it was a once in a life-time event! I'd say she's probably right, but I'm trying to remedy that. :)

Who you gonna call?

Its quite the workout to do Just Dance.
I ought to do it more often...

I think I actually won by points on one dance! Made my day :)

We finally even got Soren to give it a go!

'School' for James

I decided to do a little preschool with James this year since he and I would have one-on-one time in the afternoons. I found a fun little curriculum at Brightly Beaming. It focuses on learning the letters, shapes, colors, numbers, etc. Sometimes it's been hit and miss, like when apple-processing took over my life, but we have had fun with it. James really likes the number learning because he gets to stick the correct number of stickers on the number pages and he likes the number matching game I made for him. He is doing well with learning the names of the letters and how to write them. He is particularly fond of A and H. Down, down, over! He has gone from demanding that I color his letters and pictures to happily doing his own.
I love this little guy and his quick mind. I have to persuade him to participate at times, but when he finally does, we always have a good time together.....

learning about 'squares' by making square cookies
practicing writing B in rice

we have a little poster that we put all the week's information on as we learn about it.

James was standing on a stool with a flashlight, turning around to be a 'lighthouse' (not very happily)

learning about stars...did you know there's a star in every apple?...

Math Star

Soren came home with a dollar bill for passing off all of his math facts. He was pretty excited and pleased with himself. He's getting so big.
Our 2nd grade math star

Good Things:
Watching my kids learn and grasp concepts
Watching them work towards goals
Seeing their joy at accomplishing a goal

Aebelskivers

What a nice mom I am! One of the kids needed something related to their ethnicity for a class event and I was nice enough to get up in the morning and make Aebelskivers for them to take. They are Danish pancake balls. You cook them in the funny little pan pictured below and serve them warm with powdered sugar and syrup.
I wish we had a few more Danish and Swedish traditions. I wish I had more to pass on to my kids. I guess that's my job... to research and create traditions for our family.
they are pretty tasty!

Who's the cake boss?

When we went up to Utah Valley for Ford and Shiala's wedding, we stayed at Nate and Lori's house. On that Sunday, Ashley and Hannah decided to bake and decorate a cake. They baked the cake and made their own fondant and created all their own decorations for it. I was quite amazed at what they created and enjoyed watching them work together. I'm always happy to see my children interact with and get along with their cousins. Good job, girls!
Hannah and Ashley hard at work getting that fondant just right...

adding, pinching and smoothing....

Their creation....I think it's lovely. Better than I could do...

Ramen fun

Life with these two boys is always an adventure! Ramen is not the most nutritious lunch but it sure is fun to eat!

Love James' cute little face!

sucking it into your mouth with or without a straw is the best way to eat it!

'Good Helper!'

James has been helping with the dishwasher unloading procedure since last spring. He's had a lot of practice at it since then, at least one load a day. I try to thank him for his help and praise him for a job well done.
One day he said to me,"I good helper." And I had to agree with him. He is a go-getter, always wanting to do things, by himself - "I do it!", "I do it myself!", and when he wants to do them, which is usually right now if it's his idea.
I love that he is willing to try and do things and isn't shy or reticent about it. He just jumps in and gets things done. He is definitely project oriented, like his Grandma B. It will be interesting to watch him grow up and see what this boy can accomplish with that kind of attitude.
His daily job, helping unload the silverware from the dishwasher.
He's really good at it, when he chooses to be.

sometimes he doesn't care to put them neatly in the drawer, sometimes he does.

Good Things:
Heaters to warm this house during this Arctic Cold spell
Doing THM/weight control/exercise accountability with my sisters.
Preparing things to return to part-time work as a nail tech...

Candyland-the favorite board game

We are not big board game players in our house. But one that we do play quite often is Candyland. The little boys and I play sometimes when everyone else is in school.
This day I was happy to see that Soren and Charles had gotten out and set up a game. It was fun to surreptitiously watch and listen to them.
I love to see them choosing to play and spend time together in a happy way!
Oh, no! not Plumpy!

The rug in the living room is always the best place to set up the game!

State XC trip

For my birthday this year, Curtis made arrangements for me to travel and stay with the Cross Country team on their State Championship trip. We left on Tues, Oct. 22 and came home on the 23rd. This trip only involves the high school team so the craziness was not as high as it would have been had the jr. high teams been on the bus. I actually enjoyed the bus ride, didn't sleep, got to read a little and get to know the girls' coaches a bit better and just enjoy not having to be the driver.
I haven't ridden a school bus since I was in high school...I enjoyed the whole trip.

So fun to spend this time with one of my favorite girls!!
Tradition for this trip is that dinner is at the Olive Garden for some carbo-loading, pre-race. Yummy! Then the kids get an hour or two at the mall to wander, shop, spec out cute boys/girls, etc. Cambria and her friend, B, and I went prom-dress shopping. After we traipsed the entire mall, Cambria found one she liked in Dillard's and it's not a long, frilly, formal dress. It's just a nice, modest, knee-length red dress and she was thrilled. She has a practical side and just couldn't see spending $$$ on a dress she'll likely only wear once. I was the one dragging feet on buying it. Probably because I have dreams of seeing my girls all fancied and gussied up and looking like princesses. But I let her get the dress and she was happy to have that chore out of the way.
She's so photogenic! Everyone should eat breadsticks at Olive Garden while wearing a fez.

Doing a little shopping at the mall with friends. Funky mannequin poses caught their eye.
Wednesday was an absolutely gorgeous fall day, probably a little too warm for the runners. But it was lovely for watching a race. We arrived at Sugarhouse Park and the girls left to walk the course. I made my way to the starting area and waited for them there. Thankfully I found a few Monticelloans to help me figure out how to watch this thing. Start here, run up there to watch them go by, run back down here and watch them go by again and again, then run up to the track for the finish. Whew! Should have packed my running shoes!! If I had any.
Coming out of the starting box...I think Cambria is the girl just to the right, in dark shorts with stripes on the side,
of the girl in the front on the right side of the picture.

Terrible picture but I'm keeping it because it's all I have....darn iPhone.
Cambria was the fourth finisher on her team and the team won the 2nd place trophy. They were so excited, it was the best finish these girls have ever had at state, since the last time Monticello girls did this well, these girls were not even in school yet.

The girls team with their 2nd place trophy. First time they've placed that high since 2000. :)

maybe it's heavy?

The entire High School Cross Country team with their 1st place Boys' trophy and 2nd place Girls' trophy.
The boys team did awesome, as well. They took the State Championship for the 3rd year in a row and E. Nielson was the State Champion individual boys' finisher. Sure made for a happy bus trip home!
Loved watching this girl give it her all. Great job, Cambria!!
I wasn't sure when Curtis told me what he had arranged what I was getting myself into, but it was so much fun and I'm so glad I had this chance to make a memory with my daughter. She is a wonderful girl who is such a help to me. I love watching her grow and push herself and I'm thrilled with the woman she is becoming. Soon she'll be gone, taking on the world, and I'll miss her, but I'll have these kinds of memories to look back on when I do.
Just more photo evidence of her photogenic ways...She was playing some football type game with the boys, hence the headband and black lines under her eyes.
She likes to get right in there and mix it up.
Must come from having so many older brothers.

Good Things:
Awesome hotel with a comfy bed
Time with Cambria
See Curtis come around the corner to pick us up. I'm home!

A Decent night's sleep! What's that?

A night of uninterrupted sleep. That is my dream. I've been doing the baby thing for the last 23 years and it's getting a bit old. I'd love to finally be able to get a full night's sleep every night. Sigh. It looks as if the dream will stay just that for a while longer.

Charlie, at age 3, has quite an imagination. Here is a little conversation that we had a couple of weeks ago at 4 a.m.

I had gotten up to get James a bottle. and had just crawled back into my own warm bed, closing my tired eyes. Then I heard, "There's a snake in my room."  I chuckled quietly so as not to disturb Curtis.  In a minute I heard it again, but a little bit louder. This time Curtis laughed with me. He crawled out of bed and went in to the boys' room and wrangled that invisible snake. Thinking he had solved the problem he crawled back into bed, telling me quietly that Charlie had seen the "snake" on the baby's crib.

We were just settling back to sleep when we heard,

"It's still HERE!!"

Curtis went in and talked to him telling him there was no snake and all the reasons why there would not be a snake in his room at night. He was not convinced. Curtis  had to get up and go in to work early to do snow removal so he ended up bringing Charlie in to our bed. He tucked him in, got ready and left.

I told him that it was way too cold for snakes to be out of the ground here, that they'd be frozen. After all Dad had just gone to shovel snow. Told him that there was no way for a frozen snake to get upstairs to his room because the cats would get it anyway.

Thinking the issue was resolved I began to drift off to sleep again, only to hear,

"Now it's in HERE!!"

Yup, uninterrupted sleep is still a dream. But maybe it's overrated.

Curve balls

Ever had a curve ball thrown at you? You're standing there in the batter's box, all settled into your stance and ready for that pitch. Then it's on its way and it looks like hundreds of pitches you've swung at before and you think,"Oh, easy hit." You begin to take a mighty swing and then you realize that it's moving away from your hit zone and you're not going to hit it. In fact, you're getting nothing but air with your swing, and starting to feel pretty foolish for swinging at all. Then it's past you and you're standing there looking for the ball you thought was a sure hit.

I'm not sure I've ever had a literal curve ball thrown at me, although I did play some softball in jr. high. I do feel like life has been sending a few figurative ones my way lately though.

Like the one last summer.

Just finished nursing child #8, really excited to be able to do more intense exercise and I was attempting to eat much differently than I had been doing. I was researching and reading about whole foods and really trying to eat natural, non-processed foods. I was even contemplating getting a goat for the raw milk. Then came the blahs. The upset tummy. The unending tiredness. I blamed it all on eating different foods. That must be it, right? Well, it took me almost a month to connect the dots and realize that perhaps it was more than the food I was eating. Enter a pregnancy test. With a big, fat, positive result.

Out the window went the exercise and good eating. In the window came naps and eating whatever tasted good and didn't give me heartburn.

Seems like every time I try to improve my health something comes along to stop me. Often it's been this particular curve ball. And it's not that I mind the result. I really love my kids. But I would also love some time to give some attention to my aging body and help it become healthier as I slide into middle age.

My latest curve ball has really thrown me for a loop. No way did I see it coming.

After 8 kids I figured I knew all there was to know about baking, birthing and feeding babies. I've nursed for well over 7 years of my life. No brainer. This baby #9 would be nursed, just like all the previous babies.

And he was nursed exclusively for 3 weeks. And he didn't gain any weight. He was just barely maintaining his weight. And he was starting to look bony and was very lethargic. But surely he was okay. He had wet and poopy diapers and he latched on fine.

The problem? He was not actively nursing or swallowing. Ever. He had been starving himself for 3 weeks and I didn't know it. What to do ? I borrowed a pump to see what was available for him and was shocked to see how diminished my supply was due to him not stimulating
production with his nursing. Enter formula and pumping. Maybe if he got stronger he would then nurse properly and I could stop pumping and supplementing.

Nope. He is the laziest eater I have ever had. Now at 8 wks since his birth, I have stopped pumping because the supply has run out. After 18 years of nursing I am now back to formula feeding my infant. I have gone through all the emotions, the guilt, the grief, the acceptance and excitement.

I so wanted to nurse him. I love nursing. I love being able to have that one-on-one time with my babies. I like an excuse to sit or lie down and read and have it be okay. I miss it very much.

However, I am thrilled that there are other options and I now have a 10 lb baby with chubby legs and double chin. I love that my other children get a chance to hold and feed him, bonding with their baby bro. I love that I have a bit more freedom, allowing me to keep up with the 2 year old and the 22 year old. I am excited to be able to get back to my exercising and eating better that was sidetracked a year ago.

Maybe this curve ball is to make up for the one thrown at me last year!

wait over!

Welch baby #9 finally made his appearance on Feb 28, 2011 at 6:44 a.m. He weighed in at 7 lb 4 oz., 20 inches.

Like all our multiple of 3 children, ie. #3 & #6, he has sparse hair on top and the rest of it is quite blond.

He is my smallest baby and I jokingly asked Curtis if he thought we were running out of baby making materials. It is interesting to hold him. He feels a little fragile to me and I keep him well wrapped up so that I feel like I am actually holding onto something. He also cannot keep his clothes on. Everything falls off his little shoulders.

Regardless, we are thrilled that he is finally here and that he is healthy. His jaundice is going away and we have a beautiful little pink baby boy to love on.

*pictures to come, if I can get my regular computer up and going.

A LITTLE something to worry about! (You'd think I'd never fed a baby before...)

Last week I took the little guy in for his 2 week checkup. I even pondered, for a minute, not going to it, since this is child #8. But I decided that it was okay to go have him checked out.

Well, it turns out that he is not gaining weight.
Really not gaining weight.
Losing it, in fact.

He was down 1 lb and 3 oz from his birth weight.

Dr. is concerned and wants to see him again this week and so
my only job from now until then is to fatten this little guy up.
Read: I am the milk-cow.

I've resorted to pumping in between feedings to have
a little extra milk to let others feed to him and
using some Fenugreek to try to up the supply.

I think it's doing some good, he seems less sleepy and
is eating more vigorously than he was last week.
Hopefully it will all have been worthwhile and
the little guy will be a little less little at weigh-in.

Keep your fingers crossed for us.

Just Random Thoughts and Pics to Share

Another of our 'fun' inquiries. The girls were to research and make a "macaroni" hairdo out of shaving cream. You can't tell from the picture but they each had either a 'queue' or ponytail hanging off the back, or a bun. This was tons of fun for them until it came to the clean up part. They had shaving cream EVERYWHERE!!!!
Just a few pictures from Halloween. If you know me, you know I have an intense 'dislike' for Halloween. Therefore I do not go all out for it and I'm happy(?) to note that my attitude seems to be rubbing off on the kids. All but the youngest two decided not to dress up and go trick-or-treating. (14 year old changed his mind at the last minute and went out with friends). But we confined our celebrating to carving pumpkins, answering the door to trick-or-treaters, and eating the leftover candy--trick-or-treaters were gone by 7:30. We made jack-o-lantern pizzas and watched a movie as well. We did dress up the Soren and Sadie and let them go up one side of our street and down the other. Can't figure out why the girls laid out the plastic and then carved the pumpkins on the concrete anyway. What was the point?
Curtis has been working on building himself a larger shed in the place our old small one used to be. Part of the project included removing the concrete pad that was the floor. It was such a difficult task, he had to recruit some 'help'! Any bets on how effective this 'help' was? It was the cutest thing ever. You should have seen his eyes light up when Curtis asked him if he wanted a turn. (he does have eye protection on, it's just hard to see)
Pregnancy front: Just did the glucose screen last week. Haven't heard back yet, but don't anticipate any problems. I did get a call that my iron was low, so back on iron pills I go. Ick!! I've only had problems with this in these last two pregnancies. Wonder if it's because I'm so "old"?
Mission front: Doing well, from what we hear. Still busy working in several small towns. Has one really good investigator family they are working with. Hopefully, that will lead to some baptisms. He loves that he is within the two hour radius of the temple in Billings so that he can attend the temple once in a while. He was able to go last week. He said it's getting cold, and snow has been seen. Hope he's warm enough. I need to get some Christmas things together for him.
So excited for Thanksgiving. It is my favorite holiday!! Interesting that it follows on the heels of my least favorite...Hmmmm. Looking forward to time with family and lots of yummy food.

They Set Me Free!

What a cute little ear! I went for a follow-up ultrasound on Friday. At the first u/s the heart looked good, but it was so small it wasn't possible to see the smaller veins, so the perinatologist requested that I return in 6 weeks to get a better look. This time I took Curtis and the girls and Soren. The girls have been excited to 'see' the baby. The baby did NOT want us to see his face. This was as close as we got to seeing his profile. Although later the dr. did get a good look at the nose and lip area. No clefts.
So amazing to see all those functional body parts, bones, organs, etc. and realize that they are absolutely tiny still.
They were able to get a good look at the heart and the aorta and the pulmonary artery. Everything looked just like it should. They measured the main measuring points again and I'm measuring exactly right for dates. No changes to the due date! Rats! I was hoping they'd move it up. They told me that by the measurements the baby is about 10 inches long and weighs about 1 lb and 3 oz.
But the best part was when the dr. said, "I see no compelling reason why you should need to see us again." HOORAY!!
p.s. Much to my Sadie’s chagrin, it's still a BOY! She was really hoping it would have changed. Silly girl.
