Read Across Utah

Soren, as a 4th grader this year, gets to read LOTS of books. 4th grade is the year that children study Utah history. As part of that and to encourage reading lots of different types of books, our school has a program called Read Across Utah. They get to read a book for each county in the state and do a project about it. These genres and projects are specified by the program. As an example, for one county you might get to read a mystery and then make a word search or a poster about it. Some of the counties have projects that are simple so many minutes of reading, which allows the child to read their favorite book genre.
It has been difficult at times to get Soren to branch out and read something other than fantasy, (hello, Harry Potter) but he has read biographies, non fiction, historical fiction, realistic fiction, fantasy, mystery, etc. It's been good to see him occasionally sit and read of his own choice….I will not be sorry when it's over however. It's been harder to get a son to get the projects done than it was with a daughter.
Soren snuggled up with his reading buddy, Oreo.
