Sadie turns 14

There was a time when I was finished having kids after having child #6, girl #3, Sadie. If I had not had any other babies, my baby would be 14 today! 14!!!!!!! Yikes. It's crazy how fast those 14 years have gone in some respects and how slowly in others.

Even though she isn't the last child that we thought she would be, we are so happy that Sadie is a part of our family. She is an amazing girl with great artistic and organizational skills. She's an introvert but can be very outspoken. She has so much potential and with her self driven nature it will be very interesting over the years to see what she accomplishes. Happy Birthday, dear Sadie. We love you!!

July 24th

It was fun to have Ford, Shiala and Kami with us this year for the 24th of July, as well as Stacy's family and Wendy's. We all congregated at our normal spot on the north side of Wells Fargo Bank where there is a bit of shade. There we enjoyed watching the parade, and especially the kids, as they played and watched, cheered and collected candy. Nothing like a small town parade for candy-collecting! And of course, we spent some time in the park at the carnival, spending way too much on junk food and toys, but that's the fun of it all. I really enjoyed my cinnamon pecans!

Kami looks happy to have a piece of candy. It was new experience for her to have it thrown at her...

The boys like watching the tractors and emergency vehicles. I avoid the fire-engine
all it took was one year of being sprayed in the face and that did it for me!

Cambria and Mary came up and were paid a work day for riding in a boat for the UDNR. Raising awareness of the Cuaga  mussel problem in the lakes…"STD of the sea" Lovely.
How blessed we are for the faith of the pioneers who first entered the Salt Lake Valley on July 24, 1847. Our lives would be very different had they never come to Utah. I'm glad that Monticello celebrates the 24th!!

30 Year Class Reunion

My high school class had a 30 year reunion get-together on the 23rd of July at Circle Park. I debated about going. Wasn't sure I wanted to, so I didn't sign up to go, but I guess my curiosity got the better of me and I also thought it would be pretty lame to live in town and not go. So I just showed up after they'd already eaten lunch.

And I'm so glad I went.

It was actually a very good experience. In high school, I was the youngest person in my class and never quite felt like I was a part of it, or fit in. But, thankfully, 30 years after we graduated, I finally felt ok to be me and be there with them. I no longer felt like an outsider or unwanted. Everyone was very kind and it was fun visiting with them all and learning how they are doing. One girl came up to me and apologized in person (She already had over the internet) for filling my car with hay and dish soap our senior year. We hugged and I told her that it meant a lot to me that she would own up to it and apologize. She said it had bugged her for years. I told her that I had done/said things I wish I could take back and that thankfully we grow up and become better people.

It was very healing. I felt a genuine love for all of these people who I had struggled so much with in my high school years. It surprised me and I was very thankful that I decided to go.

Unfortunately, not many people from our already small class attended. 12-13 out of 45ish. Kind of sad. And I was the only one who lives in town who did attend.

Melanie's husband was there with his camera and took the class pictures and also offered to take any other pictures desired. I grabbed Kitty and I think he got a great shot of us. I think I even see some family resemblance! I love her and I'm glad we're more than friends. We're family!

The Crazy Weather in July

We've had the craziest weather this month! Like normal, we've been praying for moisture, or as was pointed out in the local newspaper, we should pray for actual rain, not just mist. And those prayers have been answered. We have had a lot of rain, but with that rain we have also been getting the companions Wind and Hail.

On Sunday at church, I came up the stairs from dropping the boys off to their Primary classes and saw Curtis standing at the east door, looking out. He said, "These clouds remind me of the tornado clouds in Missouri. The colors and the swirling."  As we watched, and others gathered, we saw a funnel cloud snake its way to the ground. We were all stunned! We don't get tornadoes in San Juan County! But I saw it with my own eyes. Unfortunately, I didn't think to get to get my phone out and take a picture of the first cloud, but then another one started to form. So I grabbed my phone and clicked away.

Can you see that greenish/blue tinge in the clouds? That's the color Curtis was talking about.
Once when we were visiting we had some really bad weather in Missouri which is in Tornado Alley, but I've never seen a tornado and never thought the first one I saw in my life would be in Monticello. Wow!

This one never came close to touching the earth, it just got strung out horizontally and got thinner and stringier….

This is a picture I found on FB of the first funnel cloud that came down. This was taken by a lady from Colorado who was driving west on 491 towards Monticello so it's a reverse of what we saw looking east, but its the same funnel cloud. It looks to me like it touched down or came very close to it.
These are screenshots of the weather app on my phone that shows the lightening strikes in my area. You can see that some days were a little crazy. The blue dot is my phone and there were a lot of strikes that were incredibly close. In fact, there was a strike that took out our electric transformer, as well as damaging our phone, computer and tv. We had unplugged them, but the power came in through the phone line. It actually melted the phone line into the jack and the whole thing had to be replaced. So frustrating to have no tv or computer functional. I can live without a landline phone. ;)

I love these two notifications from the weather app. I had to laugh when I saw them! "Lightening strike 0 miles from your location. Make your move to safety now." I thought they should say, "Lightening strike 0 miles from your location. Are you still alive?" LOL
On the 15th the kids and I ran to the library and while we were in there a crazy hailstorm began. It was so loud in the library due to the hail on the metal roof, that the librarian had to yell to ask me my name to check me out. We decided to stay put until it was over. This was what we found when we were able to leave….
That is hail in Soren's hand. It's the biggest I've ever seen here. (This was at home)
This was a pile of hailstones that came off the roof at the library and piled up
hailstones at the library
a pile of ice balls!
There was no way we were going to go out into that pounding hailstorm. Ouch!
These next pictures show the damage to my garden… sad.
pumpkins leaves are tattered...

tomatoes are torn up really bad, poor little plants.
I'm hoping my garden will recover in time to produce something.
This is my north flower bed. Those plantain leaves got shredded. Sigh.

Curtis said, "Well, we pray for rain, and don't stop to think what comes with that." Now I know.
The other thing I've noticed is that around here, we don't get warm rain, so when rain comes the temps drop. We have had a relatively cool summer and my garden isn't growing all that well, even though its' had rain. It also needs SUNSHINE!

Hannah is 16!

It finally came! The day that almost every girl in the whole world dreams about, thinks about and cannot wait for it to arrive. The Sweet 16.
Hannah had kept up updated on how many days til THE DAY. And then it was here.

Starting to be a lot of candles on her cake….

Lemon cake with 16 candles in a 16 formation
The best part of the day was Cambria driving home to surprise Hannah. I was the only who knew she was coming home and we were all so happy to see her. It was awesome. We miss her.

6 of my beautiful kids.
We enjoyed a family meal, then proceeded with the singing, candle-blowing and gift opening.

enduring our caterwauling...

Can she get them all?

James being very watchful and helpful

Cambria decided to let Hannah and Sadie open their gifts from her at the same time, since she wouldn't be here for Sadie's day...

Hannah is like a hummingbird, flitting and bouncing through life and always looking for 'sweetness'. She keeps the rest of us hopping and moving, sometimes it's hard to keep up with her. She is a joy to have in our home, and we are thankful she came to live in our family. It will be interesting to see what she does with her life, which idea she chooses to follow through, since she has so many.
Hannah, we love you and hope this day lived up to some of your expectations! Keep being your fun-loving, happy self and don't let anyone dim your light and zest for life!
