This is a French Butter dish or a 'butter bell'.
We first saw one at Aunt Michele's house and dad was intrigued by it.
We went to Bluff for Easter and while we were browsing in the visitor center/gift shop dad saw this on the shelf and decided to splurge on it.
We love real 'buttah' at our house and it needs to be at room temp for spreadability. So we used to put it on a small plate and kept it in the cupboard to keep it sort of clean and keep the cats out if it. Nothing like going to put some butter on your toast and seeing tongue grooves on the butter. Yuck!
Dad didn't like that it taking up so much space in the cupboard so decided he needed this tool. You put your butter in the top portion, put a bit if cold water in the bottom part and it keeps your butter at room temp and the water seals it for freshness. Pretty cool. (It holds 2+sticks of butter!)
